There was a great article on Bloomberg today (click here to read it) talking about the current Panama Canal expansion project. Yet another positive sign for the US energy industry. I really think this is going to be one of the biggest investment stories of this decade, not to mention hugely positive for the US economy. I’m also really glad the government is finally coming around to allow companies to sell our Nat Gas to other nations. We have so much of this stuff we’ve been flaring it off!
Looking at the big picture, this should also benefit the US Dollar in the long haul. Global population growth and increased standards of living in emerging nations are slowly starting to run away from the finite resources of the world. The countries that have these resources will be at the top – just look at how well Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Indonesia have done over the past decade. I’ve been saying for a few years now that being a major exporter of agriculture (namely wheat, corn, soy and cotton) will always keep America toward the top. Becoming a major exporter of energy, instead of relying so heavily on the Middle East, will only help.
